Spinach Perpetual

Spinach Perpetual is a productive leafy vegetable grown for its tender green leaves and long harvest period. Although commonly used like spinach, it is actually a type of Swiss chard, making it more reliable in the garden and suitable for repeated picking over many months.

This variety is ideal for home gardeners who want a continuous supply of fresh leafy greens. Leaves can be harvested as needed by picking a few from each plant, allowing the plants to keep producing. Young thinnings can also be used as baby leaves.

Perpetual spinach is a practical choice for raised beds, allotments, vegetable plots, and containers. It is especially useful for gardeners who want a longer cropping season than traditional spinach.

Growing Information

• Sow directly outdoors from March to September
• Prepare soil well and rake to a fine texture
• Sow in drills around 30mm deep
• Space drills around 30cm apart
• Sow approx. 12–18 seeds per 30cm
• Germination is best in cooler soil
• Avoid sowing during very hot weather
• Germination: 14–24 days, depending on conditions
• Thin seedlings as they grow
• Use thinnings as baby leaves
• Harvest leaves regularly, taking a few from each plant
• Protect with netting against pests
• Cover late crops with a cloche to help protect from frost
